Tower-Soudan third-graders brought Edvard Munch’s classic painting “The Scream” to life in art class last week. The painting, often seen as a portrait of individual
suffering, was actually a fun project for the class.
This will be “great refrigerator art,” said art teacher Sue Anderson with a smile as she imagined these paintings gracing refrigerators throughout Tower and Soudan. The students created masks, and Anderson took pictures of the students’ holding the masks over their face in the iconic position. The photos were then printed out, small enough to paste onto each student’s hand-painted background.
The students visited the computer lab to view the painting and learn about its interesting history, which includes several recent thefts. They drew oil pastel backgrounds for their “scream,” creating their own interpretations of the blood-red sky with a bridge and river in the foreground.
These junior masterpieces should be completed this week, and will soon be on display on area refrigerators. Artwork from many local students can be viewed online at www.artsonia.com (search for Tower School).
