It isn't just U.S. Steel that has often behaved badly when it comes to taking care of the environment. Those of us who have lived and worked here know how badly the mining companies can act. That's why there are regulations and enforcement. It doesn't surprise me that the Republicans don't care about the environment. What dismays me is how many current DFL politicians are willing to go blindly along with the companies. We'll soon get to see how strongly, if at all, they will support meaningful financial assurance obligations in ongoing permitting at mines.
