Former Cook man killed in brutal Virginia assault

VIRGINIA – A drinking binge by Dave Super and Michael Henry Richard Daufelt turned deadly after the two men got into an argument on Wednesday, May 6. Before the night was over, a bloodied Super lay in his apartment, savagely beaten to death, and Daufelt was in jail.

On Monday, the 39-year-old Daufelt was charged with first-degree assault and second-degree murder in district court in Virginia.

According to the court complaint, the two had been out drinking for two days.

A female eyewitness reported that the two men were arguing and yelling at each other when she arrived at Super’s apartment. Later the confrontation became physical with Daufelt kicking and hitting the 59-year-old Super despite pleas by the woman to stop. Daufelt later admitted to authorities that he had repeatedly struck Super.

Virginia police arrived at the scene to find the distraught female. She told them that Super was dead and that “Michael killed him.”

Authorities found Super lying on his back in the bedroom. He was covered in blood and his head and face were swollen, the report states.

Paramedics, who were summoned to the scene, pronounced Super dead.

The woman informed officers she told Super several times she wanted to call for help, but he yelled at her not to because he didn’t want “to give up his friend.” She also said Daufelt took Super’s wallet and cell phone from his pockets before he left.

Police were still at the scene at 11 p.m. when Daufelt returned to the apartment building and took him into custody.

At the police station, Daufelt admitted to assaulting Super.

After leaving the apartment, Daufelt said he drove Super’s car to the Cook VFW. A woman at the VFW reported overhearing Daufelt claiming he had had put someone in a coma. At the VFW, Daufelt complained that Super said he wanted to marry his daughter.

Daufelt also showed up at the Orr Liquor Store where manager Chet Neiman said he had been muttering something about pedophiles.

The autopsy revealed multiple injuries that were sustained by Super, including a broken rib, collapsed right lung, heart bruise, broken sternum and small fracture on the base of his skull. Super’s stomach was filled with a large amount of blood and there was superficial bleeding on his brain.

According to the court complaint, baseballs and a large glass mug had been used in the attack.

The deadly assault has left residents on the Range and in the towns of Cook and Orr shaken.

The North Woods School brought in counselors to help students cope with the shock of the incident, which had directly affected some of their classmates, according to Principal John Metsa.
