REGIONAL—Timberjay publisher Marshall Helmberger will be a featured panelist at the upcoming National Newspaper Association convention in San Antonio, Texas.

Helmberger will join a five-member panel that will discuss investigative reporting in small communities during the second day of the convention, set for Oct. 3-5.

The session will be moderated by Tommy Thomason, director of the Texas Center for Community Journalism, who recently authored “You Might Want to Carry a Gun: Community Newspapers Expose Big Problems in Small Towns,” which included a chapter on the Timberjay. Four of the journalists highlighted in the book will be joined on the panel by Mark Horvit, executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors, or IRE, an international organization that supports investigative reporters. Helmberger was a featured panelist at the IRE international conference in June 2013 and, this past January, he moderated a session on investigative reporting at the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s annual convention in Bloomington.

Both Helmberger and Timberjay General Manager Jodi Summit will be attending the entire National Newspaper Association convention and plan to sit in on a number of working sessions.
