Hibbing Police Officer Adam Kladivo was recognized in an awards ceremony by Chief of Police Duane Gielen for enforcement actions during Kladivo’s 12-hour shift on July 30. The ceremony was sponsored by the Mesabi Safe Communities Coalition.

St. Louis County still ranks among the top deadliest 13 counties due to intoxicated drivers. On July 30 Kladivo performed a “hat trick,” arresting three different intoxicated drivers. This is the second time Kladivo has been recognized for this extraordinary enforcement action.

“Your arrest records have shown a continued emphasis and commitment in reducing the dangers presented by intoxicated drivers on Hibbing’s roadways,” said Gielen “Your DRE training, your previous ‘hat trick’ and now the occurrences of July 30 have placed you in an elite category. As Chief of Police, I commend your determination to keep our citizens safe from one of the greatest dangers on our roadways. Thank you for your continuing efforts.” There is only one other officer in northern St. Louis County, Officer Steve Estey of the Virginia Police Department who has been able to achieve two hat tricks.

The drivers Kladivo arrested were all well above the legal limit of 0.08. All three of the drivers on July 30 blew into the intoxilizer with the results of .19, .23, and .28. These are high readings, and anything above .20 is a Gross Misdemeanor under Minnesota law.
