INTERNATIONAL FALLS - A pair of goals by Gage Merhar had 10th-seeded Ely thinking upset early.

But seventh-seeded International Falls would rally down the stretch, knocking off the visiting Wolves 8-2 in Tuesday's opening round of the Section 7A tournament.

International Falls took the initial lead 6:32 into the action, before Merhar leveled the score at 1-1 with six minutes left in the first period.

Then Merhar found the back of the net again three minutes later, assisted by Kyle Lakner, giving the Wolves a 2-1 lead after the first period.

The game suddenly slipped out of Ely's grasp late in the second period, though, as the Broncos came storming back.

Scoring four goals in a span of less than three minutes, International Falls pulled ahead 5-2, then put the game away with another three goals in the third period, bringing Ely's season to a close.

Ely was able to finish up the regular season with an exciting 2-1 overtime victory at Moose Lake Area on Friday.

Matthew Gerzin scored just 2:47 into the game on the power play, assisted by Ted Pierce, with Moose Lake Area answering late in the first period.

The score would remain tied at 1-1 through the end of regulation, with the Wolves securing the win in overtime on a goal by Joe Pierce.

Lori Huseby recorded 20 saves to earn the win.

The Wolves finished the season with a winning record of 13-11.

Seniors on this year's roster included Huseby, Ted Pierce, Jon Wenzel, Louis Meskill, Joe Wenzel, Lakner, Matthew Killoran, Alex Scholl, Ryan Knuutti and Mark Killoran.
