FIELD TWP – North Woods wrapped up a perfect 8-0 regular season here on Wednesday, rolling to a 50-24 victory over Northeast Range.
The Grizzlies got touchdowns from four different players and took a commanding 36-8 lead at the half.
After stopping the Nighthawks on their opening drive, the Grizzlies scored on their first play when Cole Martin ran for a 43-yard touchdown. Travis Hopper’s kick for the extra point was good to give North Woods a 7-0 lead.
Northeast Range responded quickly, resorting to an aerial attack to keep the chains moving. The drive concluded with 15-yard pass from Kyle Durbin to Riley Pecha. The pass to Joe Wenzel from Durbin on the conversion play was good and the Nighthawks pulled ahead 8-7.
It didn’t last long as the Grizzlies got their second touchdown of the night on a 29-yard run by Martin. North Woods added three more TDs in the second quarter. Justin Nelson, who churned out 106 yards on nine carries, scored first on a six-yard run. Hooper added two TDs with runs of six and 15 yards, respectively.
The Grizzlies scored twice more in the second half on 23-yard run by Nelson and a 26-yard catch by Olin Halverson from Tate Olson.
The Nighthawks’ Austin Lind scored twice for Northeast Range in the second half on a pair of one-yard rushes.
In addition to Nelson, leading rushers for the Grizzlies were Martin, who picked up 83 yards on three carries, and Hooper, who tallied 77 yards on eight carries.
The Grizzlies will play at home on Tuesday in the opening round of the Section 7 Nine-Man Playoffs, but their opponent won’t be known until later today.
