DULUTH – Twice during the regular season, North Woods lost by the slimmest of margins to Floodwood. Wednesday’s Section 7A semifinal followed the same script, as the Grizzlies fell short in a 55-52 loss to the Polar Bears.
The game was tied 51-51 with time running out, but North Woods was unable to take the lead. Meanwhile, the No. 1 Polar Bears took advantage of free throws to put the game away.
Darnell Goggleye and Cole Martin led the Grizzlies with 15 points apiece. Jaylen Strong and Scott Rutar each added nine.
The Polar Bears’ Riley Bernsdorf led all scorers with 25 points. Teammate Willow Christenson added 13.
The Polar Bears advance to Friday’s chappionship game where Floodwood will face Fond du Lac, which defeated Mountain Iron-Buhl, 85-69, in Wednesday’s other semifinal contest.
A more detailed report of the North Woods game against Floodwood will be published in the March 13 edition of the Timberjay.
