Blanche L. Jacobson

Blanche L. Jacobson, 78, of New London, Minn., former longtime resident of Orr, passed away at the Glen Oaks Nursing Home in New London on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Orr. Pastor Joey Bailey was the officiant. Interment was in the Leiding Cemetery of Orr. Arrangements were with Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.

Blanche was born on April 20, 1933, in Gheen, to Gust and Mary (Jiacik) Peterson. She attended school at Gheen and graduated from Orr High School in 1953. She was united in marriage to Melvin “Mel” Jacobson on May 7, 1955, in Orr. Together they were in the grocery business for 31 years, most of it owning and operating the well-known Mel’s IGA in Orr. They also owned the King-Koin Laundromat in Orr for many years. They retired in 1985 and moved to Pelican Lake. After retirement, they wintered in various southern states and later settled in Yuma, Ariz. Blanche was a 57-year member of the Orr American Legion Post 480 Auxiliary and life member of the Cook VFW Post 1757 Auxiliary. She was a great cook, and loved having extended family over for gatherings. Her husband Mel was very active in the American Legion Post in Orr and with civic duties in Orr, including the Orr Lions, Orr City Council and as a board member of the Orr Housing Commission. They were longtime members of Calvary Lutheran Church. The community lost a dedicated, well-loved member; she will long be remembered in the area she faithfully contributed to for so many years.

She is survived by one brother, Lenord Peterson, and one sister, Mary Ann Arvila, both of Cook; brother-in-law, Everett Saatela of Orr; several nieces, nephews and godchildren; special “snowbird” friends, Pat and Arlene in Arizona; and many other friends.

Blanche was preceded in death by her husband, Mel in 1999; a sister, Delores Saatela in 2003; and a brother-in-law, Leslie Arvila in 2005.
