Old sledders, sleds gather Saturday

ELEPHANT LAKE - Melgeorge’s 31st Annual Antique and Classic Snowmobile Race will take place on Saturday, March 11 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Warm weather in the past few years has been a challenge for the day but this year the event should turn out nicely. The ice has about 22 inches. The weather will be in the 20s that day and will stay below freezing for four days prior.

The race brings in many different kinds of classic snowmobiles. Last year there were 80 entries, this year Melgeorge’s is expecting some returning sleds and some new creations as well. Last year’s most unique sled was a snowmobile/boat hybrid invention but had fair competition from a pair of 1970 Arctic Cat Pumas that had been yoked together and can be driven solo or with a rider.

Kris, Melgeorge’s Office Manager, says her favorite part of the event is seeing all the different sleds, especially the ones that are really old or unique such as last year’s sled that was dressed up as a Minion, from the popular children’s movie, Minions, by Universal Pictures. “More and more kids are getting involved,” Kris said.

Even if you don’t have a classic snowmobile of your own be sure to attend this family-friendly event which includes a prize raffle with proceeds going to juveniles with diabetes, karaoke, trophies and prizes, medals for all participants fifteen and under, and food and drink specials.

Divisions include: classic 440-500ccs, antique rear engine 8 hp and under, antique rear engine 9hp and over, antique 2-cycle 10 horsepower, classic 250, and division stock air-cooled.

Melgeorge’s Elephant Lake Resort is located on 6376 County Road 180, north of Orr.
