ELY -The Wolves rolled right over Cherry last Friday, moving to 7-0 on the year in convincing fashion with a 54-14 victory.
Ely opened the game by scoring 21 points while running just one offensive play. They ended the first quarter up by a score of 40-0. All in all, Cherry was just overmatched.
Mark Heiman scored the first three touchdowns for the Wolves. The first came on a 31-yard punt return, the second was a 43- yard pass from Sean Jordan and the third was a 60-yard punt return.
Then Louie Gerzin got to work, scoring the next three. First he had runs of 11 yards and 32 yards for touchdowns and then he recovered a fumble in the endzone for his third score.
Josh Heiman would score the final two touchdowns of the game for the Wolves on runs of 35 yards and 50 yards in the second and fourth quarters respectively.
The leading rusher for Ely in the game was Josh Heiman. He carried the ball 10 times for 136 yards.
The Wolves are currently ranked number nine in the state in section nine-man. Head Coach Brian Lamppa says his team already has its sights set on the post season.
“We’re looking forward to the playoffs,” he said. “The defense is playing well. We’ve only allowed five touchdowns through seven games. Also, the offense is finding a variety of different ways to score. Hopefully we can secure the top seed and do some damage.”
In addition to the win, Ely Head Coach Brian Lamppa was notified last Friday that he received the Coach of the Week award through the Minnesota Vikings and WCCO. The Ely school district receives $1,000 for him receiving the award.
The Wolves were set to finish up the regular season against Northeast Range on Oct. 16.
