Tower Farmers Market to open next Friday, June 19

The Tower Farmers Market opens on Friday, June 19, at the usual place and time - the Historic Train Depot on Main Street from 4 to 6 p.m. This is our seventh year of bringing fresh local produce, eggs, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, jams and jellies, flowers, wild berries and other great crafts and products to our friends and neighbors in Tower and surrounding communities.

Many of our vendors have been hard at work in their gardens this spring, nurturing the lettuces, beans, potatoes, squash, tomatoes and other produce (dodging two hard frosts on May 31 and June 1) that they’ll be bringing to market throughout the summer.

This year we will inaugurate the SNAP/EBT program at the market. We are excited to make the Supplement Nutritional Assistance Program/Electronic Benefits Transfer a part of Tower Farmers Market because it means we can share our healthy produce and baked goods with more people in the area. Pastor Doug Workman and St. James Presbyterian are partnering with the market to make this possible, so a big thank you to Pastor Doug and his church.

Over the years many people and businesses have helped the Tower Farmers Market prosper. Randy and Carol Semo and the staff at Good Ol’ Days, for example, have hosted our very popular BLT Night since 2010. All the ingredients – bread, bacon, lettuce and tomatoes – are provided by our vendors. So our sandwiches are as fresh and local as a BLT can be! The Sixth BLT Night will be held again this year at Good Ol’ Days on Friday, Aug. 21.

We are proud that the Tower Farmers Market gives back to the community, too. Each year, we contribute half the proceeds from our Sharing the Harvest Raffle and BLT Night to the Tower Area Food Shelf. Over the years, the market has given more than $1,000 to the food shelf. Of course, it’s our customers, who buy the raffle tickets and BLTs, who make this possible. So, our thanks goes to them!

All these partnerships show how small communities work hand in hand to make all of our lives better, safer, healthier – and fun! And there is no doubt the Tower Farmers Market is a fun-loving group. Over the years, our vendors have become like family. Every June, when we get back together, is a big reunion, as we compare notes on garden successes and travails, catch up on news, and make note of the progress of the children of our vendors, our Market Kids and Market Babies. We are counting on them to be the next generation to take over the Tower Farmers Market.

Just as important as providing tasty, healthy produce and foods to eat, the Tower Farmers Market is a welcoming place where friends and neighbors can gather and visit on Friday afternoons. And tourists passing through Tower who stop at the market can not only buy great products but also get a glimpse of small town enterprise and camaraderie. So come to the Depot this summer. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the market,

The Tower Farmers Market Board, Janna Goerdt, Cami Kolstad-DeVaney, Mickey White and Suzanne Winckler
