Why the outrage over profits?

There has been a lot of snickering lately about the medical community and how, now with the government grab of their noble profession they will no longer be able to make a lot of money. What?  Have we forgotten the years and years of medical school doctors attend, the years of excruciating work that they do to acquire their skills, the personal devotion to their careers and their commitment to saving our lives?  And they don’t have a right to make money for that? Where is the outrage in their defense?

I’ve heard this same yak-yak about money my entire life. People prattle that corporations shouldn’t be making so much money.  Really?  Where does money to invest in growth come from?  Where does the money that supports retirement income come from?  Where do jobs come from?  Since when did making money become a crime?  And just exactly who defines what too much money consists of?

I find it interesting that these same gossips who clatter their teeth together over “outrageous profits” are the same ones who push for the government to steal more and more of our money through taxes to fling at this entitlement or that entitlement. The looters, who proclaim to care so much for their fellow man as they rob Americans, hide their true motives—power over others, acquisition of money (no matter how they get it) or the destruction of the good simply for being good.

Shame on you who clamor to rob and control your fellow Americans! You have abandoned the principles for which this country was founded, the right to pursue one’s own happiness and to be able to keep the fruits of one’s labor.  If this country falls into totalitarianism, don’t complain.  You asked for it and you will deserve it.

My only comment to Ms. Cushman is that she looks at the situation in only black and white. Either you are for profits or you are not.

Another view is that there are millions of shades of grey out there. Making money, taking a profit, even paying a bonus are not only not wrong, but indeed play key roles in providing those things mentioned above.

But there are also clear examples of excess and greed. My personal favorite example is the $1B bonus paid a few years back to the CEO of UnitedHealthCare. I can picture no possible reason or logic in that sort of extravagance. While this is an extreme example, many others could be provided.

If the discussion is on "rob and control", then please include these in your thinking and discussions, as that is what they are.

As to where the comment, "if this country falls into totalitarianism" came from, I have no idea. Doesn't fit here at all.

Well said Charlotte! It's sad to listen to some whine about their pension or "investment" funds declining in value and then turn around and blast, say Wal-Mart, for their "profiteering." To bad these morons have not taken the time to read their prospectus to see their pension/mutual fund owns shares in that company.

Can't disagree with most of what you say. But I feel there is far too much evidence that a company can make nice profits, but with little of that coming from the skills of the top management. Not in all cases. i have the highest respect for Steve Jobs (as example) and admire that his pay is in stock options. Therefore, if he helps make the company go, he benefits. Bonuses clearly based on performance are fine. But as I think you agreed, there are clear limits. "A few million" sometimes. A billion - never.

Not whining about the haves ... only in how they "earned" it, and what it might have gone for other than their greed.

Just my thoughts.

"not whining about the haves" yeah right. Yet you support any politician who whines about the haves and openly intends on taking from them to give to the "have nots." And currently, that means any individual making more than $200k or $250k for married couples--far from being truly rich in most peoples eyes, especially for those living in areas with high living expenses. Other than proving successful at bribing enough niave voters to believe in their "change," such policies continue to do nothing more than fund massive economic and social programs that will eventually bankrupt the country--no matter how much money is sqeezed from the "haves." At that point, the VAT will see to it that everyone is sqeezed.

I remain totally bewildered as to what you are for. Other than complaining of course. And again, you ought to deal more in facts and less in opinions.

Totally bewildered--yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

You, sir, are one sick individual

Well said, Charlotte! The amount of complaining about profits simply shows the ignorance of those dong the complaining.

To jtormoen, I suggest you read up on capitalism and discover what profits are. Making what you call excessive profits is usually an indication that someone has come up with something innovative and/or has figured out how to supply goods & services the public wants. It is a black & white issue - the shades of gray mean nothing if you don't first define what is the black and what is the white. And once you understand what the black & white are, you'll realize there is no defensible excuse for going "gray."
