BAUDETTE - Ely toppled host Lake of the Woods 4-1 on Saturday to notch its 12th win of the year, clinching a winning regular season.

The Wolves gained control early, striking twice in the first period on goals by Nick Mattila and Joe Pierce.

That 2-0 lead held through the second period, with Matthew Gerzin extending the margin to 3-0 with a goal 1:57 into the third period.

Lake of the Woods broke up the shutout with two minutes to play to cut it to 3-1, with Mattila tacking on a final score with eight seconds to play to seal the victory.

Jeremiah Kaercher, Mattila and Pierce each tallied an assist.

Goalie Lori Huseby turned away 32 shots to record the win.

The Wolves then dropped a back-and-forth tilt 5-2 against visiting North Shore on Monday.

The Storm capitalized on the night’s first power play, taking a 1-0 lead 7:12 into the game.

The Wolves answered nearly immediately, with Mattila tying the score just 39 seconds later off of an assist by Gerzin.

The score remained tied until midway through the second period, when Mattila struck again to give the Wolves a 2-1 advantage.

It would be a short-lived lead, though, as North Storm would return the favor with a quick response 22 seconds later to tie the contest, then took the lead two minutes later.

North Shore maintained its 3-2 lead until late in the third, when it tacked on two final scores.

The Wolves conclude the regular season tonight at Moose Lake Area, with the Section 7A tournament’s first round on Tuesday and quarterfinals on Thursday.
