Mesabi Metallics will power up a new mine and taconite production plant over at Nashwauk in February of 2026. This modern, state-of-the-art facility will begin by producing premium “Direct Reduction” pellets that are compatible with the efficient steel furnaces that are replacing the last of the out-of-date, inefficient, polluting furnaces in the Rust Belt.
On Thursday, June 19, Mesabi Metallics will host very interesting one-hour bus tours of the exciting new mine and plant site, leaving from the Nashwauk City Hall at 4:30 p.m. Then, at 6 p.m. there will be a town hall-type event back at city hall, with discussion and questions answered. In my opinion, this project is now the model for how we need to best utilize our valuable iron ore resource across the Range, right up to the very viable, realistic, common-sense job-producing evolution to a finished steel production facility at this site and others, something that is long overdue here on the Range.
I really recommend that folks get in on this tour. It’s an amazing place with an optimistic crew. All you have to do is show up. Also, their web site, mesabimetallics.com, is really worth looking through.
