GREENWAY - A rough day in the field proved costly for Ely on Thursday, as host Greenway made the most of its extra opportunities in a 7-2 victory.
The game did start well for the Wolves, which took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a double by Gage Merhar, followed by a Dylan Kienitz base hit.
That edge would quickly be erased, though, with Greenway tying the score in the bottom of the first inning, then scoring in four of its final five turns at bat to build a 7-1 lead.
The Wolves picked up their final in the seventh, with Will Davies drawing a walk and then scoring on a triple by Merhar.
The Wolves finished with four errors, leading to four unearned runs, along with seven walks and a hit batter.
“Against solid teams like Greenway, we cannot give them additional outs and put people on base via walks and beans if we want to be in a position to defeat good teams,” Ely head coach Frank Ivancich said.
Kienitz and Merhar had two hits apiece and Joey Pierce and Tyler Housey each added one hit.
