Ely boys take top spot at Eveleth meet

EVELETH – Ely varsity track looks headed toward another strong season after an outstanding showing here last Saturday. The boys squad finished first by an overwhelming margin among 12 regional teams, racking up 128.5 points, far ahead of the 91 points tallied by second-place finisher Mesabi East. The girls weren’t far behind, taking third place with 66 points out of 12 teams.

Ely earned first-place finishes in the 4 x 800-meter relay, with a time of 8:51.85, nearly a second faster than Greenway-Nashwauk-Keewatin. In individual competition, Luke Olson and James Schwinghamer each notched first-place finishes in the 800 and 3,200-meter races respectively.

Isaac Gawboy narrowly missed a first-place finish with a time of 11.94 seconds in the boys 100-meter dash, good for second place. He finished just 0.3 seconds behind Mt. Iron-Buhl’s Jericho Peterson.

Raif Olson and Kjetl Midtunn took third and sixth place respectively in the 110-meter boys hurdle event.

Among the girls, Ely freshman Lauren Olson finished second in the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 53.82. Olson took third place in the 100-meter hurdles.

Eighth-grader Zoe Devine had a second-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:39.18.
