DULUTH - In their first playoff meeting against South Ridge, Ely was hounded by errors, dropping into the elimination bracket.

On Tuesday, the Wolves exacted revenge.

Needing a win to keep its season going, Ely came through in a nail-biter, topping South Ridge 5-4 in Duluth to earn a spot in the Section 7A championship.

Cody Davis notched his second win in relief in three games to guide the Wolves on the mound.

Ely was scheduled to play Deer River in Thursday’s finals for the chance to go to state, needing two wins in a row over the Warriors to win the section title.

Ely opened Tuesday with a 10-3 elimination game win over Silver Bay.

The Wolves jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and cruised from there, riding the complete-game effort of Trevor Mattson on the mound.

Gage Merhar went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and four RBIs, while Mark Killoran also went 3-for-4 and scored three runs.

Last Thursday, the Wolves struggled to find their footing in a 5-0 winners bracket game defeat at the hands of South Ridge in Superior.

Joey Pierce and Luke Olson each collected two hits, but the Wolves ultimately stranded 10 base runners without crossing the plate.

Trevor Mattson threw a four-hitter with only one walk, striking out four.

Ely bounced back later Thursday night with a 19-3 win over Northeast Range.

The Nighthawks scored three runs in the top of the first inning and maintained a 3-0 edge through two frames.

But Ely broke out for 15 runs in the third inning and didn’t look back for the elimination game victory.

Killoran and Merhar each picked up two hits, with Killoran driving in four runs and Merhar knocking in a pair while scoring three times.

Thomas Montana added a hit, two runs and three RBIs.

Davis threw 3-2/3 innings of no-hit relief to record the win.

The winner of the Section 7A tournament advances to the state tournament.

Quarterfinal games will take place on Thursday in Jordan, with semifinal and consolation action continuing on Friday in Jordan and Chaska.

The Class A championship game will be held at Target Field in Minneapolis on Monday, June 19.
