NASHWAUK - Ely asserted itself as a Section 7A contender on Thursday, knocking off Nashwauk-Keewatin 5-4 at home.
Cate DeRemee and Jenna Merhar each had two hits, with Merhar delivering a pivotal two-run triple in the third inning to drive in Shayla Zaverl and DeRemee.
Charly Flom picked up a hit and scored two runs and Courtney Kellogg contributed a hit and a run as well.
Pitcher Erika Mattson was dominant, striking out seven batters and not allowing an earned run.
Mattson also dropped down three sacrifice bunts to move runners into scoring position.
McCartney Kaercher turned in a stellar defensive play at second base to end the game.
The Spartans had entered the game with a 3-1 record and having outscored their opponents 30-2.
“We played very well against a team that is one of the favorites in the section,” Ely head coach Tom McDonald said. “We got some key hits against their strong pitcher and made enough plays defensively to get the win.”
