HIDDEN VALLEY— Ely runners dominated their homecoming invitational on a cool and drizzly afternoon here on Tuesday. After days of rain, the Hidden Valley trails were soggy, but that didn’t slow the Ely girls runners, who took first while the Ely boys took second.

“Today was a very good meet for us despite the rainy day and soggy course,” said Ely Head Coach Jayne Dusich. “However, the temperature was great for running.”

Five Ely girls finished in the top ten. They were once again led by senior Ryne Prigge who ran a great race, finishing first overall with a time of 21:00.5, 32 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Next for Ely were fellow senior Emma Terwilliger, who finished fourth, seventh grader Zoe Devine in sixth, senior Evelyn Bercher in seventh, and sophmore Kalyssa Eilrich in ninth.

Sophomore Luke Olson paced the boys team, finishing the race in first place with a time of 17:07.6. The boys had two other runners finish in the top ten with sophomore James Schwinghamer taking third and senior Ben Gustafson in tenth place on his final race in Ely.

“Ryne and Luke both raced well, taking the lead and keeping it,”added Ely’s head coach. “Most of our kids improved their times.”

Halfway thru this season both teams seem to be gaining confidence with experience. “It’s taken us awhile to gel as a team for both boys and girls,” said Coach Dusich. “We have had some good workouts so I’m happy.”

Both teams have a short break before their next meet on Saturday, Oct. 7, the Swain Invitational in Duluth with races starting at 10 am.
