Grizzlies crush L-BF in opening round of playoffs

HIBBING— The outcome of the Grizzlies’ opening round playoff tilt against Littlefork-Big Falls was never in doubt. With just a single win on the season, it would have taken a miracle for the struggling Vikings to upset North Woods’ boys basketball team, which has been the state’s top-ranked Class A team all season long.

There were no miracles on hand Wednesday night at Hibbing’s Lincoln Elementary gym, as the Grizzlies routed L-BF, 136-36.

For most high school basketball teams, racking up 100 points is extraordinary by itself. Beating an opponent— even a weak one— by 100 points speaks to the dominance that this remarkable Grizzlies’ squad is demonstrating week after week. It also speaks to the strength of the North Woods bench, which played much of the game. A total of 12 Grizzlies players scored in the first half alone, racking up 83 points by the break. Six players reached double digits by the end of the game.

Senior Tate Olson led the way offensively, with 23 points. Freshman Darius Goggleye wasn’t far behind, coming off the bench to score 17 points. Sophomore Trevor Morrison, who worked the paint most of the game, added 15 points. Senior Brendan Parson added 12 points, while juniors Blake Scofield and Chase Kleppe added ten points apiece. Also scoring were Trevor Morrison, with nine, Tanner Barto, with eight, and Cade Goggleye with seven.

The Grizzlies are set to take on Nashwauk-Keewatin on Saturday night, at Hibbing Memorial. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
