FIELD TWP- No Trev? No problem.

With senior forward Trevor Morrison sitting this one out, the Grizzlies managed to adjust, coasting past Cook County 93-67 on Wednesday in their first sectional tournament game.

Morrison liked what he saw from his teammates.

“Me being out wasn’t a good thing, but we hoped we could get a good win starting out,” Morrison said. “We played good team ball, and everybody stepped up, especially defense and bigs coming in.”

The one player the Grizzlies couldn’t contain was Vikings’ guard Pete Sutton. Scoring high, scoring low, the Cook County senior put up 45 points on the Grizzlies, but North Woods effectively shut down the rest of Cook County’s offense.

“I thought defensively we had stretches in the first half when we really got after it,” Head Coach Will Kleppe said. “Playing without Trevor, we needed some guys to step up and I think they did a really nice job to take that first step in the tournament.”

Leading 40-25 at halftime, the Grizzlies used short scoring spurts to gradually extend the lead to as many as 31, 81-50, with 4:40 left to play. With North Woods firmly in control, Kleppe tested out various combinations of starters and reserves.

“We got a lot of guys in the game, a lot of guys contributed in different ways. We were able to rotate some guards through, we got Jonah Burnett in there who gave us some good minutes.”

Junior center Darius Goggleye had a strong performance inside the paint and finished with 22 points. Jared Chiabotti was hot on his heels with 20, followed by Brenden Chiabotti with 16, TJ Chiabotti with 14, and Alex Hartway with 12.

For the second time in as many weeks, the Grizzlies will face off against Carlton, this time with bigger stakes in play. North Woods handled the Bulldogs 80-57 on Feb. 24. The tenth-seeded Bulldogs pulled the first upset of the Section 7A tournament Wednesday by knocking off seventh seed South Ridge 69-66.

Saturday’s game will tip off at 4 p.m. at Hibbing Memorial Arena in Hibbing.
