FIELD TWP - Two weeks, two walk-off wins.
Mixing in a rout in the middle, North Woods rattled off three wins in a row over Mesabi East, Chisholm and Littlefork-Big Falls, improving to 6-3 on the season.
“We’re doing the little things that are basically getting us back into games,” North Woods head coach Jeff Chaulklin said. “Two weeks in a row we came from behind and won, kind of crazy.”
It was the second high-scoring showdown of the season with Littlefork-Big Falls on Tuesday, with the Grizzlies avenging an earlier one-run defeat with a 9-8 home win.
The Grizzlies trailed 8-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but plated two runs to tie it at 8-8.
In the bottom of the seventh, Matt Schultz came through with a clutch single to drive in Dan Holman with the winning run.
The Grizzlies made do with starters out of the lineup in each game this week, having several newcomers come in and produce.
“These younger kids are stepping up, so I’m very proud of that,” Chaulklin said. “Staying focused and keeping their heads in the game.”
While the team’s fielding has been somewhat sporadic with new faces filling in across the lineup, the Grizzlies are proving to be “a good enough team to overcome that,” Chaulklin said.
North Woods also won at home 11-3 over Chisholm on Friday and 5-4 over Mesabi East on Thursday.
