I urge you to consider absentee voting this election

This fall, Minnesota became one of 27 states across the nation to offer no-excuse absentee voting. That means you can vote absentee for any reason, or simply because you feel like it. This is the first presidential election since the law went into effect – and it opens up a whole new world of possibilities for voters.

I’m all too familiar with the business of fall. You might be a hunter – like myself, and deer season means you spend a lot of time away from home. You may be busy closing up the summer cabin and readying it for winter. Whatever your reason is for being busy on Nov. 8 – consider voting absentee.

If you haven’t already signed up to receive a ballot in the mail, it’s not too late. You can apply online at the Secretary of State’s website: http://www.sos.state.mn.us/elections-voting/other-ways-to-vote/vote-early-by-mail/.

In Minnesota, we also allow you to vote early in person – in fact for the 46 days prior to Election Day, Minnesotans can cast their ballots at local election centers.

Minnesota has historically led the nation in our voter turnout. But in 2014 our good standing took a tumble, to 6th place. Let’s regain that honor. No matter which method you choose, absentee, voting early or coming in on Nov. 8 – I encourage everyone to vote. It’s our civic duty – and it’s one I take very seriously.
