VIRGINIA—Motorists could be using the new Hwy. 53 reroute, including the state’s tallest bridge, by the end of next month. That’s a month and a half ahead of schedule, according to project manager Patrick Huston. “We’re approaching 90 percent complete,” Huston said on Tuesday.
The $240 million project is expected to come in very close to on-budget. Some additional clean-up at the site was necessary, when workers uncovered buried asbestos-containing siding in the pit. That effort boosted the construction cost by about 1.8 percent.
MnDOT is working with the city of Virginia, the IRRRB, and other organizations on planning for a celebration event, set tentatively for Aug. 18. No time has been set and details are still being finalized.
