BECKER - Teams from North Woods finished in the top ten here at the State Golf Tournament last week. The Grizzlies girls tied for fifth place along with Murray County Central with 800 points, 96 off the top spot.
The boys finished in sixth with a team combined score of 699.
“The first day all of the players had rounds lower than their season average; that helped us get a solid start for the tournament,” Girls Head Coach Kandi Olson said. “We set a goal to move up as a team by the end of the tournament and we achieved that goal.”
Standout junior Coley Olson had the best run out of all of the North Woods players, tying for seventh as an individual, carding a 173.
Olson came into the tournament strong, finishing the first round in third place, but fell behind during the second round. A rally on the back nine helped her secure a top ten finish and a place on the state medal stand.
For the boys, sophomore Sam Frazee was the top finisher with 161, good for 11th place in the individual rankings.
Junior Kylie Parson finished in 26th place among girls golfers with 189, while freshman Haley Bogdan carded a 208, good for the 58th spot. Seventh-grader Victoria Olson scored 236 to finish in 79th, while freshmen Kadence Holland and Morgan Burnett finished with 238 and 239 respectively.
For the boys, Ian Olson carded 176, good for 45th place. Seniors Chase Kleppe and Blake Scofield scored 186 and 187 respectively for 60th and 61st place. Freshman Davis Kleppe carded 189 to finish in 65th, while freshman Ty Fabish rounded out the Grizzlies with 230 .
“I felt the boys had a good tournament experience,” said Boys Head Coach Will Kleppe. “There’s a lot of pressure to play your best when you get down there and it can throw you off a bit.”
Kleppe added that all of the players were close to their season averages.
The top players from both teams will be back to compete next year, and both Kleppe and Olson say there is plenty of room for improvement to keep the teams competitive for another run at the state title next June.
