Orchid walk set for Sunday at Lost Lake peatland

Posted

LOST LAKE— Minnesota is home to almost 50 species of orchids and the Lost Lake Peatland, part of the state’s Scientific and Natural Area program, is home to several of them. And you should be able to see at least a few of our native orchids here during an orchid walk, set for Sunday, June 29, from 3-4 p.m., and led by Arika McGraw with the SNA program.
Among the orchids you can expect to see are Arethusa and Rose pogonia, which can be seen near a portion of the Arrowhead snowmobile trail.
Given recent heavy rains, the conditions on the site will be very wet, so tall waterproof boots are recommended if you’d like to keep your feet dry. Be aware that the ground in a peatland can be very unstable so the conditions may not be ideal for those who are unsteady on their feet. There are no maintained trails, public restrooms, or drinking water on the site so don’t forget to bring water with you. You’ll also want to be prepared for biting insects, particularly deer flies. A head net or hooded bug shirt is typically your best defense against these pesky biters. And, most importantly, don’t forget your camera!
To attend this event, meet up by 3 p.m. near the intersection of Cty. Rd. 476 (Holter Rd.) and Roberts Rd., located about seven miles west of Tower. From the Y Store, take Hwy. 1 west approximately 1.25 miles, then turn on Holter Rd. and continue north one mile to near Roberts Rd.
You can contact McGraw with any questions at arika.mcgraw@state.mn.us or at 218-735-3971.
