Koivisto edges Rantala in B/E school board race

REGIONAL— The St. Louis County School Board will have three new members as a result of the Nov. 8 election. A final vote count in the Babbitt-Embarrass attendance area was delayed by a recount, which ultimately changed the outcome.

Chris Koivisto, an instructor at Vermilion Community College, edged longtime board member Gary Rantala 572 to 557, according to the recount. The initial tally had put Rantala up by four votes, but the recount uncovered a mistake in one precinct, made at the St. Louis County Auditor’s Office, which over-represented Rantala’s total votes and undercounted those cast for Koivisto.

In the Orr attendance area, Patrick Christensen defeated Melissa Roach 676-472, for the seat being vacated by Nancy Wall Glowaski.

In the AlBrook attendance area, Christine Taylor defeated Gardner Lepp 697-411 to replace the retiring Robert Larson.

Current board chair Chet Larson, of Cotton, narrowly hung on against a strong challenge by Randy Jackson, winning 696 to 653.
