ELY – A new student housing project at Vermilion Community College is taking a different path.

Instead of a proposed $6 million dormitory, development plans now call for a $4.5 million townhome project, according to Provost Shawn Bina.

The new project will hold 120 students, which is just as many as would have been housed in the proposed dormitory, he said.

Bina said the change in direction is based mainly on funding. “We looked at state general obligation bonding in our financing, but the risk of denial or delay in the project was just too great,” he said.

Instead, VCC will be applying for revenue bonds which will be available in 2015. “This is more of a traditional financing scenario and is a better way to go and more of a sure thing,” he said. VCC will be looking to obtain $3.5 million in bonds and another $1 million in outside funding.

The new units will replace the out-of-date 84-bed duplex units and would be located behind the campus. Bina described the units as three-story town houses which would house four students on the top and bottom floors and have a common area on the middle floor. Three to five townhouses would be connected. Several of these structures would be located around campus.

“We want to keep the aesthetics of Vermilion Hall,” he said.

Construction could begin in 2015 and plans are to have them ready for the 2015-2016 school year.
