ELY— A fast start doesn’t always lead to a quick finish. Ely easily took the first game in their Tuesday match-up with Silver Bay, but had to battle back from deficits in the final two games to complete the sweep. Ely took it 25-15, 25-22, and 25-20.

It was a great match to watch as sets two and three had multiple lead and momentum changes, allowing the home town crowd to erupt on the match’s final point.

“We came out strong in the first set,” said Head Coach Andrea Thomas. “We struggled with serving and hitting errors in sets two and three, but were able to slowly battle back.”

Rachel Coughlin served seven straight points in the second set to get the Wolves back on track. Lida Dodge provided the same consistent serving in the third set to help regain the momentum for Ely.

On offense, sophmore Brielle Kallberg led the Wolves, slamming 12 kills and seven blocks, while sophomore Erika Mattson added nine kills. Junior setter Lida Dodge led the team with 26 assists.

“Overall, we’re happy to get the win,” added Thomas. “But now we need to focus on eliminating the errors that we can control on our side of the net.”

Ely traveled to Mesabi East last Thursday and won in three straight sets 25-7, 25-19, and 25-12.

“Girls came out strong tonight,” said Thomas. “We had good serving runs in each set. They hustled and did a nice job with hitter coverage.”

Ely had a number of strong performances, led by Mattson with 11 kills and four ace serves, followed by Kallberg with 11 kills. Winter Sainio added three kills and four ace serves, Kalley Fischer tallied five ace serves and Dodge notched 24 assists.

Ely, now 7–3, has a short break to prepare for the Virginia Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 23. They travel to Nashwauk-Keewatin on Sept. 25 before hosting Duluth-Marshall on Tuesday, Sept. 26.
