EAGLES NEST TWP- The St. Louis County Rescue Squad used an aerial drone to help locate two lost hikers in Bear Head State Park last Saturday as night fell. One of the two hikers had called 911 at 6:11 p.m., looking for help as it was getting dark.
Responding deputies were unable to contact the hiker due to poor cell phone coverage in the area, so they contacted the rescue squad for assistance.
County 911 dispatchers had been able to get the GPS coordinates of the caller’s phone, when they originally called 911, so rescuers had some idea of their location. The hiker was later able to contact 911 a second time and dispatchers told them to remain where they were. The drone was then deployed to locate their exact position. Rescue squad members were then able to walk to the lost hikers and lead them out of the woods. Neither party needed medical attention, but the hikers were also not prepared to spend the night in the woods. The two were visiting the area and not familiar with Bear Head State Park’s rough terrain.
