ELY- It’s been a rebuilding year for both the Ely and North Woods girls basketball teams, and last Thursday in Ely the Wolves showed they’re progressing faster than the Grizzlies in that regard, as Ely cruised to an easy 78-39 win.
The Wolves controlled the contest from the opening tip and were up by 20 points at the break, 46-26. Ely had the hot hand from the field, dropping in 51 percent of their two-point shots as they pounded the ball inside and hitting 31 percent from three-point range. They also controlled the board with 43 rebounds and forced the Grizzlies into 17 turnovers.
Five Wolves scored in double-digits, with Clare Thomas leading the way with 20 points. Amelia Penke and Maija Mattson each scored 14, Zoe Mackenzie notched 13, and Audrey Kallberg dropped in ten.
Scoring for North Woods was not available.
It was the fifth consecutive win for the Wolves, including holiday break wins over Cook County, 73-25, and 49-46 over 7AA Two Harbors.
