My four grandparents immigrated to the U.S., seeking better opportunities than at their original home. In fact, one great-grandmother sent her 16-year-old son (my grandfather) alone to the U.S. since she was afraid that he would be killed at home smuggling goods from Sweden. (Finland was a lot poorer then.) We now have people at our southern border seeking the same thing as my grandparents sought … better opportunities, safety, and peace to raise their family. Our country is richer because of my grandparents. It will be richer in culture and heritage as well as in hardworking folks who pay taxes as in my grandparents’ generation. How can I refuse these immigrants? How can we refuse them? Yes, we need a better immigration policy but to round up naturalized citizens, denaturalize them, and deport them to who knows where is unthinkable. To separate children from their parents is immoral. We still have over 700 children in foster homes because we cannot locate their parents due to poor record-keeping. The GOP laid plans for all of this in the last Trump presidency — the GOP now plans to expand this plan; see Project 2025, pages 555 and 567-8.
I will vote Democratic, partially to respect my grandparents and partially to strengthen our country. Please join me in voting for Democrats and the future of our democratic country!
