TOWER—Robert Monteith has become the new managing editor of the Timberjay.
Originally from southern California, Monteith has worked as a journalist for over 15 years.
His career started as a reporter in rural Alaska. He’s worked in several other western states, including Wyoming, Washington, and California, and most recently served as the managing editor of the Coeur d’Alene Press in Idaho.
“When I realized the quality of journalism Jodi and Marshall had been producing in the Timberjay, I knew I wanted to be a part of it,” Monteith said. “I hope I can continue their work advocating for this amazing region of Minnesota.”
“We were pleased to be able to bring Robert to our area,” said Timberjay Publisher Marshall Helmberger. “He brings a ton of experience in both the editorial and business side of the newspaper industry. He’s young, with a desire to excel at this craft, which makes him an ideal leader to help continue the tradition of quality journalism at the Timberjay.” The hire will allow both Helmberger and general manager Jodi Summit to begin to slowly step back from some of their duties at the paper.
Monteith comes to Tower with his wife, Erin, and son, Billy. Erin, originally from Elrosa, Minn., near Sauk Centre, will be teaching math at the Vermilion Country School beginning in the fall. She earned her teaching degree at Mankato State and eventually received a master’s degree from the University of Wyoming. She says her style of teaching guides students to make connections across all content areas and find their place in education.
“I’m excited to be here,” she said. “I’m happy to be back in Minnesota and to share the beauty here with my family.”
Billy will be attending kindergarten at the Tower-Soudan school beginning this fall. When not in school, he likes being outside, building things, and visiting his Minnesota relatives.
“I like fishing with grandma and grandpa,” he said.
His favorite food is mac and cheese.
