ELY— The Timberwolves put the icing on the cake here on Monday as they wrapped up their regular season without a loss to a Section 7 team. Monday’s win over Cook County was one of the most dominating of the season as they crushed the Vikings 25-5, 25-8, 25-3 to finish their regular season at 24-3.
Ely’s three losses all came during the Burnsville showcase while playing against some of the top-rated volleyball squads in the state. That qualifier now includes Ely, currently ranked 13th among Class A volleyball teams based on their Quality Results Formula, or QRF, rating of 118.4. That’s the highest of any team in Section 7A.
Ely senior Clare Thomas had a big night at the net for the Wolves in the regular season finale on Monday, posting a game-leading ten kills along with five digs and three ace serves. Fellow senior Lilli Rechichi added seven kills and six ace serves, while sophomore Audrey Kallberg added seven kills and six digs. Sophomore setter Gretta Lowe tallied 31 assists along with six digs, while sophomore Amelia Penke notched nine aces. Sophomore Charlotte Hegman added five kills and three aces.
Playing in Nashwauk last Thursday, the Wolves thoroughly dominated the Spartans, winning in straight sets, 25-8, 25-10, 25-10. Lilli Rechichi led the way in kills with 14, along with nine digs and five ace serves. Kallberg posted eight kills and ten digs, while Lowe posted 35 assists and six digs. Thomas tallied three kills and seven digs, while Makenzi Huntington adding five kills and four digs.
Ely will have a bye in the opening round of the Section 7A playoffs. They’ll be hosting the winner of the play-in round at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
