Ely area turns out to honor fallen firefighter Leslie Washington

ELY- A massive and somber crowd estimated at 500 gathered Tuesday evening in Whiteside Park to pay their respects to Alaskan firefighter Leslie R. Washington, who died Aug. 11 after experiencing what was described as a medical emergency while working on the wildfires north of town.
Present on the stage were Ely Mayor Heidi Omerza, First Presbyterian Church of Ely Reverend Corey Larsen, MN DNR Wildfire Operations Supervisor William J “BJ” Glesener (above left) and the Ely City Band.
EMTs, firefighters, police, and people from around the region listened as Reverend Corey Larsen delivered a spiritual message, and William Glesener delivered the eulogy. Bagpiper Joe Linneman (left) of Ely opened and closed the ceremony to a teary crowd.
Glesener reminded the group that “wildland firefighting involves high risk environments requiring extensive training for emergencies. EMTs, medics, and firefighters undergo rigorous first aid training. These training exercises aim to achieve the best outcomes when emergencies arise, though sometimes the results aren’t as hoped.”
“The response from the local community has been heartening,” Glesener continued. “Signs of support throughout the area touch firefighters. Knowing that their efforts are appreciated makes a significant difference for those working on the front lines.”
A brief statement from Governor Tim Waltz’ office concluded, “The challenges faced by these fires continue to disrupt and impact our communities across northeastern Minnesota, but I have seen the bravery, compassion, and resiliency shown by the first responders and neighbors. As governor, I am proud to see the community rallying together to support one another and stand alongside the community of Noorvik, Alaska, as we mourn. Leslie will be missed by many.”
