Ely girls hit hot streak, win three in a row

ELY — If there’s a constant for Ely girls basketball, it’s always found on the scoreboard at the end of games against clearly inferior opponents. The Timberwolves are known for playing their game against any foe and make no apologies for it.
That was clearly the theme in a three-game win streak that began with lopsided wins in December’s Ely Holiday Classic and culminated on Tuesday with a 60-38 blowout on the road at Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin.
The Titans were no match for a Timberwolves squad clearly starting to find their stride after a 1-4 start to the season.
Lydia Shultz was on fire, going nine-for-16 from two-point range and seven-of-nine from the charity stripe to lead the Wolves’ attack with 25 points.
Amelia Penke also scored in double figures with 14 and tied with Gretta Lowe and Zoe Mackenzie for team high in rebounds with eight. Ely had eight players in the scoring column in the 22-point win.

Holiday Classic
Ely rolled through two home games at the Ely Holiday Classic, opening with a 71-32 win over Two Harbors on Dec. 29 before completely dominating Fond du Lac 95-15 on Dec. 30.
The Wolves put away Two Harbors early for a running-time victory.
Shultz turned in another strong performance with 19 points, six steals, and four assists.
Ruby Lowe knocked down four three-pointers and finished with 12 points. Amelia Penke cleaned off the boards with 15 rebounds.
The Wolves were even more unforgiving the following night against the Ogichidaag, steamrolling to a 75-2 halftime lead against Fond du Lac by turning rebounds and steals into uncontested layups.
The Wolves shot nearly 70 percent from the floor, with four players scoring in double figures. Penke led the way with 22 points on 11-of-15 shooting, and Visser added16 points. Lowe had 13 and Shultz 11.
The streak evened the Wolves’ season record at 4-4. Ely has a Saturday afternoon road contest against Hill City/Northland before returning home to face Duluth Marshall on Tuesday.
