AURORA — The Ely girls claimed the Iron Range Conference championship and the boys placed fourth Tuesday at the Arrowhead Conference meet at Mesabi East. The teams battled through blustery winds, cool temperatures, and intermittent rain during the dual-scored competition.
Six schools, including Ely, competed for the IRC title within the larger 10-team Arrowhead Conference field. No overall team standings were provided for the full meet.
The Timberwolves girls leaned on a balanced effort that included victories on the track, in the field, and in relay competition.
Sophomore Violet Udovich sprinted to a pair of wins, taking the 100-meter dash in 11.93 and the 200 in 24.87.
Ely also dominated the relays.
The girls 4x400 team of Lydia Shultz, Addison Forsman, Mattie Lindsay, and Molly Brophy finished first in 4:26.09, while the 4x800 squad of Lindsay, Elsa Ellerbroek, Isabella Macho, and Brophy won in 10:45.03.
Macho added an individual victory in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 51.05, while Lindsay placed third in the same event in 53.64.
