REGIONAL — Ely’s Nordic skiers took to the trails at Spirit Mountain for the Grand Rapids Invitational on Tuesday, with the boys placing second and the girls finishing third.
Aksel Skustad and Oliver Hohenstein finished high on the leaderboard, taking second and third. They came close to crossing the finish line together, with Skustad clocking a time of 10:37.2 and Hohenstein finishing in 10:39.1.
Wyatt Devine placed ninth in the field of 63 with a time of 10:47.7. Otto Devine finished 15th with a time of 11:26, and George Sponholz rounded out the scoring with a 23rd-place finish and a time of 11:55.8.
Duluth East narrowly took the team title with 466 points to Ely’s 462.
Mattie Lindsay led the girls team by finishing 15th with a time of 14:27.5. Molly Brophy clocked a time of 15:02.8 to place 24th. Julie Nelson took 30th with a time of 15:26, Elsa Ellerbroek crossed the line in 35th with a time of 15:46.2, and Aila Harding completed the scoring with a time of 14:53.6, finishing 36th.
Duluth East took the team title with 485 points, followed by Brainerd with 455. Ely scored 415 to tie for third with Mora.
