William E. King
William E. “Bill” King, 94, of Virginia, died on Monday, Oct. 6, 2025. He was born on Feb. 22, 1931, in Cloquet. A private family service was officiated by Jared Bangs at Mlaker Funeral Home with American Legion Post 480 presenting the flag. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to the American Cancer Society-Hope Lodge, 2500 4th Ave. S, Minneapolis, MN 55404.
He is survived by Laurie King of Lakeville; two grandchildren, Tyler and Jayme; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ideal and Daniel; wife, Zoe; sons, Bradley and Timothy; three sisters, Elaine, Doris, and Carol; four brothers, Norman, Donald, Duane, and Herb; and special niece, Kay Zika.

Robert M. Maki
Robert M. “Chick” Maki, 93, lifetime resident of Ely, and a proud U.S. Army veteran, passed away at his home on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025, surrounded by his family. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 20 at Grace Lutheran Church in Ely. A luncheon will follow at 1 p.m. at the Grand Ely Lodge. The family would like to thank Essentia Hospice for helping his final weeks be comfortable in his own home. Donations in his memory may be made to Grace Lutheran Church or Northwoods Partners in Ely. Family arrangements are entrusted to Kerntz Funeral Home of Ely.
Left to remember his life and anecdotes are his children, Cheryl Anderson (Calvin), Charlene Harkins (Kenny), Robert Maki, and Tracy Maki (John Dybvig); grandchildren, Andria LaFollette, Liisa Harkins, Siri Harkins, Matthew (Emily) Maki, Samantha (Mark) Buerkle, Evan Dybvig, and Leo Dybvig; great-grandchildren. Tate and Jack Buerkle; brother and lifelong outdoors companion, Jim Maki; and many cousins and friends.

Paul M. Trumble
Paul Michael “Buddha” Rasinski Trumble, 63, of Ely, passed from this life onto the next on his own terms on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at his residence. A graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Ely Cemetery. Father Charlie Friebohle will preside over the Christian burial. If weather allows, we will have a few of Paul’s favorite treats and drinks after the service has concluded. Please join us as we celebrate Paul and his impact on those who knew and loved him. He is missed by those of us who befriended him, but we know he is now where he clamored to get for many of the past few decades.

Fay MaryAlice Black Schroeder, 92, longtime resident of Babbitt, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2025, at her daughter Cheri’s home in Terre Haute, Ind. She will be laid to rest in the spring of 2026 in the Babbitt Cemetery beside her beloved husband, Gust. Her legacy of love, creativity, and family devotion will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Doug (Glenna) Schroeder, Denise Walters, and Cheri Olsen; grandchildren, Vanessa (Andrew) Scudder, Barbara Walters, Brian Haus, Cassie Olsen, Jason Olsen, and Nathan Olsen; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters, Renee (Frank) Budimir and Nancy (Bob) Poferl.

Donna M. Doyle
Donna Marie Hammarlund Doyle, 94, of Ely, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025. A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 27 at Grace Lutheran Church in Andover. A special thank you to the staff at Carefree Living and the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely. Arrangements are under the direction of the Cremation Society of Minnesota.
She is survived by her children, Robert M. Doyle, Dorine Doyle King (Scott King), Timothy A. Doyle, Carrie M. Doyle (Robert Warden), and Steven W. Doyle; grandchildren, Melody A. Doyle, Gillian L. Frank, Ester L. Frank-Doyle, Ella L. Frank-Doyle, Jayden L. Frank-Doyle, Kathleen M. (Michael) Tucker, Sabrina L. (Jason) Harber, Emily E. Ciochetto, Renae C. Doyle, Laura A. Renstrom, Lisa M. Renstrom, Jeffery R. Renstrom, Gina R. Doyle, and Loretta J. Chosa; and ten great-grandchildren.

James B. Laine, 78, of Tower died Friday, Oct. 10, 2025 at home. A gathering for family and friends will be held from 1 - 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Cron-Sheehy Funeral Home. A complete obituary, including the date and time of the Musical Memorial will follow.
