INTERNATIONAL FALLS — The Timberwolves forgot their offense at home Tuesday night as they managed just four shots on goal in a 4-0 shutout care of the Broncos. I-Falls players, meanwhile, peppered Ely goalie Henry Fetterer with 64 shots. Fetterer managed to brush aside all but four, an impressive performance against the Bronco’s offensive onslaught.
The Wolves held off the Broncos in the early going as the teams went scoreless until five minutes into the second period. The Broncos went on to notch two more in the period and a final goal midway through the third period to secure the win.
The game was relatively penalty-free. Jayden Zemke spent four minutes in the box for interference and hooking, while Sean Merriman spent two minutes for tripping. I-Falls players were called twice for penalties.
The loss dropped Ely’s record on the season to 3-6.
The Wolves added one to the win column this past Saturday, Jan. 3, with a convincing 11-3 win over Lake of the Woods on Ely’s home ice. The Bears jumped on the board early with back-to-back goals midway through the first period. Ely got on the board late in the period with an unassisted power play goal by Rhett Johnson.
The rest of the game was virtually all Ely as the Wolves exploded for seven goals in the second period and three more in the third. Cooper Mayranen, Zemke, Merriman, and Hunter Halbakken notched two goals apiece, while Owen Marolt, Lucas Stalboerger each added one in the scoring frenzy.
Lake of the Woods players spent much of the second period in the box and Ely took full advantage with four power play goals in the frame. Ely goalie Lewis Powell notched 26 saves on 29 shots on goal.
The Wolves were set to travel to Wadena on Friday to take on the Wolverines. They’ll face Bagley/Fosston on Saturday and will hope to even the score against International Falls on Tuesday at the Ely Ice Arena. That game gets underway at 6 p.m.
