ELY — Ely split a pair of games early this week, earning a 4-2 home win over Mesabi East on Monday before falling 4-2 at Silver Bay on Tuesday.

Mesabi East
A three-run fourth inning proved the difference as Ely topped Mesabi East 4-2 in a tightly contested game.
The Giants struck first with a run in the third, but the Timberwolves answered in the bottom of the fourth. Zoe MacKenzie and Amelia Penke opened the rally with back-to-back singles to put two runners aboard. Lindi Zemke then delivered the key blow, lining a triple to right that scored both runners and gave Ely a 2-1 lead. Zemke came home on a throwing error on the play, extending the advantage to 3-1.
Ely added an insurance run in the fifth. Lauren Anderson singled and was replaced by courtesy runner Lucy Oelke, who moved up on Peyton Huntington’s single, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1.
Mesabi East threatened in the seventh, putting together a pair of singles and taking advantage of a wild pitch to bring a run home, but MacKenzie and the Ely defense closed the door from there.
MacKenzie went the distance in the circle, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six.
Silver Bay
Ely dropped a 4-2 decision at Silver Bay on Tuesday, as a four-run fifth inning by the Mariners erased an early Timberwolves lead.
Ely struck first in the third. Makenzi Huntington and Zoe MacKenzie reached with singles, and Amelia Penke followed with a double to center that scored Huntington for a 1-0 lead.
The Timberwolves added another run in the fourth, taking advantage of defensive miscues.
Ella Perish reached on a single, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a steal of home as Ely pushed the lead to 2-0 without recording an RBI.
Ely carried that advantage into the fifth before the Mariners broke through. Silver Bay opened the inning with a pair of singles and scored its first run on an error, then followed with three straight run-scoring singles to plate four runs and take a 4-2 lead.
The Wolves had chances late, including putting two runners on in the seventh when MacKenzie singled and Penke reached on an error, but Ely couldn’t come up with the tying hit.
MacKenzie took the loss in the circle, allowing four runs, none earned, on nine hits while striking out five.
