Rep. Stauber…what will your response be to the assassination of Melissa Hortman and her husband and the shooting of Senator Hoffman and his wife on July 14? We need more than your prayers.
I called your office about you wasting your time on the legislation to strengthen oversight of our northern border that you introduced last week. I stated that, yes, our country is in danger, but it’s in danger from within, not from Canada. Now this happens.
As long as Republicans and this administration continue with hate speech and to back the Presidents’ rhetoric, this will not end. This hate has started from the top with Donald Trump and now his followers think it’s okay. His constant comments on minorities (while the only minority threatening America is billionaires), his stand on our LGBTQ community, his attacks against diversity, equity, and inclusion, and his attacks on our constitution, universities, health care, women’s reproductive rights, food insecurity, and so on, create an environment conducive to violence.
This hate has infested many of your party’s officials, including JD Vance, Marco Rubio, Marjorie Taylor Green, and Ted Cruz, to name a few.
I want to believe that you are not one of them, that a Minnesotan could not support this hate. However, by voting in bills that promote inequality, and by failing to stand up to the rhetoric of hate being widely promoted by our top politicians, you have contributed to the violent environment that allowed these assassinations to happen. We will continue to see violence such as this if you continue to stand by and do nothing.
Please begin to lead in a positive way and move our country and the world in the right direction, away from hate and injustice. It must start at the top.
