REGIONAL — North Woods golfers Gage Aune and Laurin Glass each punched their tickets to the Class A state golf tournament last week, leading the Grizzlies at the Section 7A tournament held Tuesday and Wednesday, May 26-27, at Minnesota National Golf Course in McGregor.
Aune qualified for state for the second straight season in the boys tournament, while Glass earned the first state berth of her varsity career in the girls competition.
Both golfers will compete at the Class A state tournament next Tuesday and Wednesday, June 9-10, at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker.
Boys
Aune tied for third overall in the boys field with a two-day score of 163, shaving 13 strokes off last year’s sectional performance on the same course, where he shot a 176 and claimed the final individual qualifying position with a ninth-place finish.
The sophomore separated himself from the field with a strong second round. After opening with an 84, including matching 42s on the front and back nine, he carded a 79 on day two with rounds of 40 and 39. Aune recorded 10 pars and one birdie during the final round, offsetting only one double bogey.
Aune is looking to improve on his 69th-place finish at last year’s state tournament.
North Woods finished third in the five-team boys competition with a score of 698, behind champion Marshall School and runner-up Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.
Joining Aune in the lineup were Reece Whitney, 14th, 176; Jordan Herdman, tied for 15th, 178; Sawyer Glass, 19th, 181; Brayden Amundson, tied for 35th, 196; and Peyton Swanson, 40th, 208.
Girls
Glass finished sixth overall in the girls tournament with a two-day score of 201, improving 27 strokes over last year’s sectional tournament, where she placed 12th with a 228 while competing as North Woods’ lone entrant.
Her strongest stretch came on the opening day front nine, where she carded a nine-over-par 45 to help build the cushion she needed to secure a qualifying spot for state.
Glass shot 101 on the opening day and 100 on the second day.
Sophia Hoffman also completed both rounds for North Woods, finishing tied for 16th with a 230, while Khloe Holland placed 30th with a 263. River Deatherage, Kate Cheney, and Kiley Kopatz each competed in the opening round only.
NER/Ely results
For Northeast Range/Ely, senior Cylvia DeBeltz narrowly missed a state berth in the girls tournament, tying for ninth with a 210 after shooting identical rounds of 105. Colette Moskowitz finished 22nd with a 242, while Coco Gillson placed 31st with a 275.
In the boys tournament, Northeast Range/Ely did not field a complete team score after only two golfers completed both rounds. Rhett Johnson tied for 28th with a 192, while Tyler Fritz finished 42nd with a 221. Ethan Nickolson and Mason Spate-Kurnava each competed in the opening round only.
