City finalizing process for hiring new clerk-treasurer

TOWER- The city council here was set to hold a special meeting on Oct. 30, in part to establish a hiring committee to select the city’s new clerk-treasurer. Current clerk-treasurer Michael Schultz’s last day on the job is Friday, Oct. 31.
The city has advertised the position online and has already received a handful of applications, according to Schultz, who noted that several who applied had just read about the vacancy in the Timberjay.
The job description for the clerk-treasurer position is available online on the city’s website. The job entails wearing a lot of hats: overseeing all city employees, city utilities, parks, trails, the city-owned campground, airport, fire department and ambulance, the civic center and depot, as well as supporting city committees and commissions. It also entails extensive financial work and attending council meetings and preparing meeting minutes.
The job is full-time and in-person, with an advertised pay range between $60,000 and $80,000.
The deadline for applications is Nov. 7. In the meantime, Dianna Sunsdahl, retired Breitung clerk, has been trained on some interim clerk duties and will be filling in until a permanent clerk is hired.
“I expect it will be a bit messy for a few weeks,” said Schultz, who added that he is more than willing to be on call to help during the transition and once a new person is hired.
Other items on the special meeting agenda include approving the plat for Village on Vermilion, which is under development behind the Marjo Motel, discussing funding for the purchase of a new dump truck for public works, applying for state funding help to repave Marina Dr., establishing a blight enforcement committee, and discussion of additional funding options for the harbor project.
