REGIONAL- Construction is nearing completion on a $7.8 million fiber-optic broadband expansion expected to reach more than 600 homes and businesses in portions of St. Louis and Itasca counties.
In St. Louis County, construction has been completed in Sturgeon Township and western Alango Township, with fiber splicing now underway. Paul Bunyan Communications expects to begin service installations in those areas by the end of October.
Construction is continuing in Field Township and northern Alango Township. Fiber splicing will begin after construction is completed, with service installations expected to start this winter.
In Itasca County, construction has been completed and service is available in portions of Carpenter Township and the unorganized township immediately to its east.
“We’re excited to be nearing the finish line on this important project,” Paul Bunyan CEO Chad Bullock said. “This expansion reflects our continued commitment to bringing essential, high-speed broadband to underserved areas. Reliable internet is critical for work, education, healthcare, and staying connected, and we are proud to deliver that through our all-fiber optic network.”
The project is estimated to cost $7.81 million. Funding includes a $3.92 million in state Low-Population Density Program grant, $2.2 million from Paul Bunyan, $1 million from Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation, $583,250 from St. Louis County, $41,200 from Alango Township, $40,000 from Sturgeon Township, and $17,800 from Field Township.
Residents and businesses may check service availability or sign up at paulbunyan.net or by contacting the company’s Grand Rapids office.
