LAKE VERMILION- No one was injured in an early Sunday morning fire that destroyed three watercraft and damaged part of the marina at Fortune Bay Resort Casino.
The fire also caused minor damage to two other watercraft and extensive damage to a portion of the marina’s dock system. The cause remains under investigation.
The Greenwood Fire Department responded with a fire truck and two fire boats, according to Fortune Bay Director of Facilities Tony Yeley. The Breitung Police Department, Bureau of Indian Affairs Police, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, and Deputy State Fire Marshal Andrea Licari also assisted.
Yeley praised Greenwood Fire Chief Brian Trancheff for providing technical and professional advice during the response.
“Brian really went above and beyond, and we can’t thank him and others enough who have assisted us,” Yeley said.
Fortune Bay security personnel and marina staff also assisted.
Cleanup and containment work continued Monday as crews dealt with fuel, oil, and other contaminants released during the fire.
“Eagle Docks and Vermilion Property Services were quick to step in and did the removal of the vessel while environmental troubleshooters put down the oil booms and are still here today doing containment and clean-up of contaminants,” Yeley said Monday afternoon.
