GREENWOOD TWP — A cabin was destroyed in a late-night fire last Thursday in Greenwood Township near Tower, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire was reported at approximately 10:44 p.m. in the 1900 block of Westhaven Dr. Initial reports indicated the cabin was fully engulfed in flames and that the fire had spread to nearby trees, threatening additional structures in the area.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it spread further, authorities said.
The cabin was declared a total loss, and several other structures on the property sustained damage.
One adult woman was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Authorities said her injuries were believed to be non-life threatening.
Several displaced individuals were taken to Fortune Bay Resort Casino for the night.
Authorities also reported that four dogs are believed to have perished in the fire.
Responding agencies included the Greenwood, Vermilion Lake, Tower, Breitung Township, and Cook fire departments, along with the Minnesota DNR, Tower Area Ambulance Service, and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Orr fire
A faulty gas line on a gas grill is believed to have contributed to a house fire early Tuesday morning north of Orr.
According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, the Orr Fire Department and several surrounding mutual aid departments were dispatched at approximately 12:21 a.m. to a structure fire in the 5000 block of Old Hwy. 53, a few miles north of Orr.
Authorities said the fire originated from a gas grill located on the deck of the residence.
Firefighters were able to quickly bring the blaze under control.
The homeowner, who was the only occupant of the residence, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation by EMS personnel and was later released.
The fire remains under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.
