Sen. Hauschild announces he’s running for re-election in District 3

REGIONAL—Residents of northeastern Minnesota can expect a rematch in the District 3 Senate contest this year.
State Sen. Grant Hauschild, who won a tight contest against Babbitt Mayor Andrea Zupancich in 2022, announced he is seeking re-election durong a campaign kickoff event Monday in Hermantown. Hauschild emphasized his work on ambulance services, tax relief, and labor issues during his first term representing a vast swath of northeastern Minnesota.
Earlier this month, Zupancich announced she will challenge Hauschild once again for the seat.
Speaking to supporters at the Iron Workers Hall, Hauschild outlined a platform focused on “putting Northern Minnesota first” and working across party lines to address regional concerns.
“In a time when politics feels chaotic and more divided than ever, Northern Minnesota needs leadership that shows up, listens, and gets things done,” Hauschild said. “Everything I’ve worked on has come back to one question: does this put Northern Minnesota and the families who live here first.”
The first-term senator highlighted several legislative achievements, including securing funding for rural ambulance services after what he described as years of stalled efforts. He also worked with local law enforcement and the Grand Portage Band to maintain Coast Guard operations on the North Shore.
Other accomplishments Hauschild cited include guaranteeing unemployment benefits for laid-off steelworkers, Social Security tax relief, expanded child tax credits, and property tax reductions.
St. Louis County Commissioner Paul McDonald praised Hauschild’s regional focus at the campaign launch. “He puts the Northland first every single time and works with anyone who is serious about delivering results for our communities,” McDonald said.
Duluth Building Trades President Jack Carlson said Hauschild has supported infrastructure funding and collective bargaining rights. Local child care provider Courtney Greiner credited the senator with taking action on child care challenges facing providers and parents.
Hauschild framed his campaign around continuing to work on issues affecting Northern Minnesota while avoiding what he called political “noise.”
