Timothy Moran Dyhr, 75, formerly of Ely, passed away peacefully in Tucson, Ariz., on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation in his name may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of the Northland at https://bgcnorth.org/give/.
Tim was born on Jan. 9, 1951, to Ann and Henry Dyhr. He grew up in Ely, spending much of his time at the family homestead on White Iron Lake and in the Minnesota wilderness. He enrolled at the University of Minnesota in 1970 where he met Ann Carol Dyhr. He and Carol were married in 1971, and he earned a BS in Biology with an emphasis on natural resources management in 1974.
Tim and Carol moved to Belle Fouche, S.D., in 1980, then to Reno, Nev., in 1983. Tim worked with the park agency in Minnesota, leading a natural resources inventory on 25,000 acres of parks, and helping with the reintroduction of trumpeter swans. He took a resource management job in the mining industry in Reno, where he worked for 14 years before moving his family to Tucson in 1994.
Tim worked over 45 years in the mining industry. While serving as a vice president for Nevada Copper in 2017, he was awarded for Environmental Stewardship Distinguished Service by the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers for his work on the Pumpkin Hollow project in Yerington, Nev. He served as a founding member of the NevGold Corporation Board of Directors. Fellow board members noted that his insight, judgment, experience, and commitment were deeply valued, and that his contributions extended well beyond the board room. He was committed to doing things well and helping the communities he worked with, serving as a board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Mason Valley in Yerington.
Tim was transitioning into retirement but continued to work in the industry. His favorite activity was spending time with his three grandchildren, and he was a perpetual organizer of family get-togethers that included his three sons and grandchildren. Tim selflessly cared for Carol after she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in February 2014, helping her survive cancer and stay healthy since. He displayed a strong work ethic and contributed service and financial support to countless charities that he and Carol supported. In his passing, he donated his organs and tissue with the hope of saving the lives of others and furthering medical research, reflecting the kindness to others he showed throughout life.
Tim is survived by his wife, Carol; three children, Ben Dyhr (Jennifer Hutnick), Jon Dyhr (Lise Johnson Dyhr) and Matt Dyhr (DeAnna Dyhr); and three grandchildren, Ezra, Lydia and Nessarose, to whom he passed on a wry sense of humor, intellectual curiosity, and a passion for adventure.
